Based in Sunderland in the north-east of England, the Wearside Amnesty International group is one of many local groups of Amnesty International UK, which in turn is the UK national section of the worldwide Amnesty International (AI) movement. The Wearside group has been contributing to AI's work on human rights since 1975 and has members from Sunderland and South Shields.
If you're one of the people who have spoken to us or picked up one of our leaflets, and would like any more information, or want to know about when we meet, please do get in touch.
The Group meets on the last Tuesday of every month at 7:15pm (there are no meetings in July, August or December). Please email us for further information if you would like to come to one of these meetings, if you would like to chat about getting involved, or if you would like any further information. You can also find us on Wearside Amnesty's Facebook page. If you’re based in a different part of the UK, but would like to find a local group, you can look on Amnesty’s Local Groups page.
In the past few years the group has been involved in a variety of activities: campaigns on arms control, the death penalty and torture, educational work and fund-raising, contacts with other local groups and more. If you have any good ideas for activities to raise the profile of Amnesty and human rights or to raise funds for continued campaigning then please get in touch. The Wearside Branch is also involved in the regular campaigning work of Amnesty, often taking part in letter-writing and lobbying, as well as educational and awareness-raising activities. In the last few months the group has worked on issues relating to the imprisonment of journalists in Eritrea, the decision by the UK government to accept evidence gained by torture, violence in Israel and the Occupied Territories. The Group has occasional guest speakers; talking about subjects like working with the Guarani Indians in Brazil, the work of the North of England Refugee Service, and a visit to Palestine to act as a peace monitor.
